Hungary is situated in the Carpathian Basin. Bordered by Slovakia to the north, Ukraine and Romania to the east, Serbia and Croatia to the south, Slovenia to the southwest and Austria to the west. The official language is Hungarian, also known as Magyar, which is part of the Finno-Ugric group and is the most widely spoken non-Indo-European language in Europe. The history of medieval Hungary is available for study as many archival royal charters and other documents survive. Serious study has been made into the origin of the Hungarians, conjecture led to postulation of a Semitic history of their ancient peoples in view of recent Urugic, Volga Don finds of prehistoric origin. We now have to rethink the origins of the Magyar peoples because the Don Volga Finn-Ugaric Carpathian origin has now been challenged.
